I can't remember how I heard about this book, but the premise intrigued me: opera singers and secret pasts? It sounds like The Phantom of the Opera, which is my favorite musical. I figured I'd give this book a try, even though I don't usually go for historical fiction.
The Queen of the Night by Alexander Chee tells the story of French opera singer Lilliet Berne. As an accomplished soprano, Lilliet longs for the one thing every singer does—a chance at immortality by originating a role in a new opera. When it comes, Lilliet is shocked to discover the opera tells her own story—the story of her past she's fought hard to keep buried. Only four people could have betrayed her to the creator of this opera. Through schemes in the present and flashbacks of the past, we understand exactly who Lilliet Berne is and why the one thing she has wanted may not be the blessing it appears to be.
I really wanted to like this book. I enjoyed learning about Lilliet's strange journey to the fame of an opera singer, her numerous adventures, and her romances, but the book was hard to follow at times. Most of it details Lilliet's past, but it occasionally returns to the future for brief sections with little warning or indication. Additionally, the historical setting made some things difficult to understand, such as the politics and relationships between some characters. Lilliet seemed stuck in unhappy situations, and I couldn't understand why she didn't do something different to escape and get what she wanted. For example—without spoiling anything—Lilliet seems close to getting everything she wants at the end of the book, but it doesn't pan out as I expected, and I didn't understand why.
I often had to force myself to continue reading this book. The writing was lovely, and I'm sure historical fiction and literary fiction fans would enjoy it, but as someone who primarily reads fantasy and sci-fi, it didn't work for me. I was so disappointed, given how excited I was at first, and I have read other historical fiction novels I enjoyed. Alas, this was not my cup of tea.
Unfortunately, I have to rate The Queen of the Night by Alexander Chee 2/5 stars. Again, this is just my personal opinion. Perhaps someone else will read it and decide it's their new favorite book! Or maybe I just needed to pay closer attention while I read.
