I have been a fan of Marissa Meyer's books ever since I read The Lunar Chronicles. They are some of the best sci-fi fairy-tale retellings I've ever read, and so is her book Heartless. Once I heard about Renegades, I knew I had to read it.
Renegades by Marissa Meyer takes place in a world where prodigies—humans with superpowers—emerged, and the world imploded into chaos and crime. Ace Anarchy and his Anarchists fought for freedom from oppression for everyone, but the world saw him as a villain. The Renegades rose up, defeated him, and established a new world order as protectors and lawmakers. Their Renegade forces grew as more prodigies joined them until they had teams stationed worldwide to protect humanity. But Nova Artino, the niece of Ace Anarchy and a loyal member of the Anarchists codenamed Nightmare, will do whatever it takes to see them all burn and follow through on Ace's vision for a free world. This includes joining the Renegades as a spy, but when she meets Adrian Everhart, the son of two founding Renegades, she has to fight to remember her true mission. Meanwhile, Adrian searches for answers about the death of his mother—answers that, unbeknownst to him, Nova may have.
I have always loved superhero stories—I've watched nearly every Marvel and DC movie or TV show to date—so Renegades was quick to enthrall me. There are so many moving parts and secrets to be discovered, all woven together seamlessly. As soon as you have one answer, another question is revealed, and the intrigue grows. What happened to Adrian's mother? Will Nova be able to keep her cover? Who is The Bandit? What other secrets are the Renegade Council hiding?
Every single detail is intoxicating, and I could hardly put the book down. Of course, the hints of a budding romance certainly helped too. Each character is so distinct and interesting that I enjoyed learning about all of them, and I can hardly wait to learn more in the two sequels (thankfully, both have already been released and are sitting beside my bed just waiting for me). Even though the novel is relatively long at about 550 pages, I sped through it without ever noticing the length. That's how captivating it is.
It is very easy to rate Renegades by Marissa Meyer 5/5 stars. If you have ever liked superhero stories even a little bit, you need to read it.
